News: ABB introduces robotic educational package for schools

ABB Robotics has developed a “robotic educational package” allowing schools, colleges and universities to purchase a complete robot package at an affordable cost for hands-on teaching of programming and operational concepts in the classroom and lab. Utilizing the same technology used in a wide range of industrial applications, ABB’s educational package will give students the opportunity to learn the skills needed to effectively manage modern robotic manufacturing systems. The package includes the IRB 120, ABB’s smallest ever robot; the IRC5 Compact Controller; and 50 licenses for RobotStudio, ABB’s simulation and offline programming software. An additional software bundle is also available as an option.

“With robots playing a vital role in improving the efficiency and competitiveness of manufacturers in an expanding variety of industries, schools need an affordable means to teach modern manufacturing concepts and encourage more students to pursue engineering and manufacturing careers,” said Joe Campbell, vice president of the ABB Robot Products Group in the US.

WinSystems announced EPX-C380, an EPIC-compatible, Intel 1.66 GHz Atom-based single board computer (SBC). The EPX-C380 uses either the Intel Atom single core N450 or dual core D510 processor combined with the ICH8M I/O hub controller both of which are supplied from Intel’s Embedded Architecture Division for long-term availability. Operational from -40° to +70°Celsius, these SBCs provide an open and powerful platform for processor- and I/O-intensive solutions for demanding applications such as medical, COTS/military, security, transportation, pipeline, and machine control. The EPX-C380 measures 115mm x 165mm (4.5” x 6.5”) and is compatible with the EPIC (Embedded Platform for Industrial Computing) computer board standard.

The EPX-C380 uses the integrated Intel Gen 3.5 graphics processor which incorporates both VGA and LVDS display interfaces with resolutions of 1400 x 1050 and 1366 x 768 respectively. Memory support includes up to 2GB of DDR2 667 MHz SODIMM system memory as well as a CompactFlash socket and optional 2MB battery backed SRAM.

The EPX-C380 has two Gigabit Ethernet ports, two SATA channels, and eight USB 2.0 ports plus four RS-232/422/485 asynchronous serial channels onboard. Also a parallel port consisting of 48 lines of digital I/O, high definition audio (7.1 codec), LPT interface, real time clock, and a watchdog timer round out the onboard I/O. Since the EPX-C380 architecture is PC compatible, it supports WES 7, Linux, Windows XP embedded, and a vast software development tool set including device drivers and libraries. It also supports other x86-compatible real time operating systems such as QNX and VxWorks.

The EPX-C380 requires only +5 volts and typically draws 1.9 Amps (typical) with 1 Gigabyte of DDR SDRAM installed. The board is RoHS compliant.

A regularly scheduled calibration interval program enables quality control personnel to correct divergences from a desired setting, whether it's because of normal slippage over time or because of adjustments or damage to the tool. If the applied torque values are out of range, cut the calibration interval in half and then verify the tools at a greater frequency.

Use Torque Analyzers
Effective use of a torque analyzer is a fast and reliable method of calibrating torque tools to their proper settings or verifying the setting is still valid. The EZ-TorQ II can be used for quick tests on the line or in the lab to determine whether torque tools are holding a given setting.

Using a quality torque analyzer has become increasingly important for many companies to ensure that proper torque is being applied. Testing torque is a science and not something that can be left to chance.

ABB has now fully integrated manufacturing, development, sales and marketing of the former Torbar Flowmeters Ltd. business and has formally released a range of averaging pitot tubes. These products retain the Torbar name, which is known and respected worldwide, and incorporate all the versions previously marketed by Torbar Flowmeters. In-line, fixed and withdrawable designs are available for pipe sizes from 10 mm to 8 meters in diameter.

Key features of the Torbar range are its sensor design and the use of a "dual averaging" technique. The tube design features unique profiled flats around the downstream hole. These flats define the separation point of the flow lines from the tube and create a stable pressure area at the downstream pressure sensing hole. This design maintains a more constant flow co-efficient at high velocities, giving the Torbar pitot tubes a wide rangeability for measuring flows rates (turndown).

The dual averaging feature takes the pressures developed at each upstream hole (from the impact of the flowing medium) and initially averages them within the outer impact tube. It then averages to a second order (increasing accuracy) within the internal averaging tube. By ensuring that the upstream impact pressure signal is not biased by the pressure at a sensing port next to the output point, the meter is less susceptible to the effects of non-ideal upstream pipe work configurations.

The Torbar units are being manufactured as a one-piece outer tube. This gives the unit optimum strength by avoiding the need for welded joints, which could be points of failure under process stresses. ABB Torbar averaging pitot tubes are available in a wide variety of wetted materials to suit most liquid, gas and steam applications, whether flowing in circular or rectangular pipes or ductwork. For stack gas emission monitoring, an automatic air purging system is availble to keep the sensing ports clear of particulates.

Dubai Aluminum Company Limited (DUBAL), one of the world’s largest aluminum producers, is using a Smart Wireless network from Emerson Process Management to better manage compressed air, and has cut energy use by 13 per cent at its facility in Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates.

Because of increasing demand for compressed air in each of the facility’s seven plant areas, the company sought a cost-effective way to monitor trends and spikes in air flow consumption. The new wireless network provides operators with real-time data around the clock.

“We now have more knowledge about the compressed air consumption in the plant and have therefore improved our ability to plan and control costs,” said Vivek K. Singh, DUBAL Senior Project Engineer, Control & Instrumentation, Plant Engineering Services.

DUBAL connected 20 Rosemount 648 wireless transmitters onto its existing, hard-wired air flow meters, which are installed on the compressed air utility lines running along the plant periphery.

The wireless transmitters form a self-organizing field network and convert the meters’ 4-20 milliamp signal, transmitting the same to a Smart Wireless Gateway. The gateway sends the reliable signal data to DUBAL’s existing supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system using IEC-approved WirelessHART protocol.

The new network has eliminated the need for operators to spend about two hours a day making rounds to the meters to record data manually. Previously, if the observer was not at a meter during a spike in usage, there was no way to identify when and where it had occurred.

The company chose wireless as a quick and cost-effective alternative to laying cable to connect its air flow meters to the SCADA system. That project was estimated to take three months and would have required tunneling in and providing electricity to an area that encompasses about 1 kilometer by 500 meters.

With Emerson’s assistance, the Smart Wireless installation was completed in less than three weeks without removing and reinstalling equipment or shutting down operations. Each device was commission in only 15 to 20 minutes. Emerson also provided support to DUBAL to ensure the system was properly integrated with its SCADA system, including providing a half-day of staff training.

The Smart Wireless network has performed perfectly despite harsh conditions in the area, including a strong magnetic field, heavy rain, sand storms and lightning.

This is the first wireless implementation for the 30-year-old company. DUBAL intends to install additional wireless networks in other parts of its plant, Singh said.

Two software support packages are offered for Modbus/RTU and two for Modbus/TCP devices. Fujitsu Components America announced self-wetting adhesive protector sheets (SWAPS) in standard sizes to fit popular LCD dimensions. The protector sheets offer a low-cost, readily available way to extend the life of any touch screen or flat panel during product use, testing or shipping.

The SWAPS now come in standard LCD sizes ranging from 7- to 17-inches diagonal. They can also be custom die-cut to fit any display’s surface dimensions.

SWAPS use a patented, self-wetting adhesive that enables easy, accurate and static-free application in the field using only light finger pressure. High shear resistance prevents displacement during use, yet the sheet can be removed by hand, even after an extended period of time, without leaving a residue or creating static electricity that can harm delicate circuitry. SWAPS can also be repositioned and reused, thereby reducing waste and materials costs.

The RoHS-compliant SWAPS are constructed of an ultra-thin (.003”-.004”/75-100um) hard-coated film that protects against repeated stylus input and environmental elements. Simple Access to Recorded Data
Unlike the proprietary file formats typically used in other high-performance data recording instruments, the RTS 2703 records its data files in the Windows-compatible NTFS file system. This means users can access files with the instrument’s workstation capabilities immediately after recording with no file conversion processing required. Users can also remove the RAID drives from the instrument and use them immediately in another Windows-compatible system with no file conversion or other special software.

Each data file includes a header containing a time stamp, file size and recording parameters such as channel number and acquisition settings. With long files, users can extract segments of interest from within the file and save them as separate files. Data is accessible off-unit through a variety of mechanisms, including transfers using the built-in USB or gigabit Ethernet ports to external storage or other network-connected computing systems. Users can also copy files to optical disk using the 8X double layer DVD +R/RW drive on the front panel.

SystemFlow Software
As with other members of Pentek’s RTS 27xx family, the dual-channel recording instrument is fully supported by Pentek’s Model 4990 SystemFlow Instrument Software. This includes a Windows-based graphical user interface (GUI) that provides a simple means to configure and control the instrument. Virtual-instrument push buttons, status indicators, pull-down menus and data-parameter entry windows provide simple and intuitive operation for all functions. Using open WirelessHART products, Emerson Process Management’s Smart Wireless network is automating flow monitoring to increase production on the company’s Gullfaks offshore platforms in the northern part of the Norwegian North Sea. Needing a monitoring approach able to be installed without interrupting flow, operators are using wireless devices to transmit real time temperature data that indirectly monitors flow, allowing quick reaction to any loss of well pressure and maximizing throughput from the well. This installation follows the success of Smart Wireless on StatoilHydro’s Grane platform.

StatoilHydro, the leading oil and gas operator on the Norwegian continental shelf, was occasionally losing flow from the producing wells at its Gullfaks A, B and C platforms, caused by a loss of wellhead pressure. Early detection of the loss of flow is important as this enables operators to flow the well through the test separator and thus re-establish flow by reducing pressure. Bringing flow back quickly improves throughput and over time significantly increases production.

The loss of flow was very difficult to detect due to there being no existing flow-metering devices installed within the well pipes. Installing such devices for this application was not practical as this would require a complete shut down of production, which would be far too expensive in terms of lost throughput. A non-intrusive solution was required, but the introduction of new sensors brings with it the problem of connecting them back to the control room. The wellhead was already a very crowded area and for safety reasons it had to be kept as clear as possible. The introduction of additional equipment such as new cabling, cable trays and junction boxes was not possible.

In the past, StatoilHydro detected loss of flow by sending an operator to the wellhead where they placed their hand on the pipe to feel whether there was a difference between the pipe temperature and the ambient temperature. Typically well fluid is 60° C so the pipe feels warm, but should flow be interrupted it slowly drops back to the ambient temperature. Temperature readings were taken only at the start and the end of a shift, so a loss of flow could easily go undetected for long periods and production would be lost.

Needing to automate the monitoring so as to provide real-time data, while also reducing personnel presence in hazardous areas, StatoilHydro initially implemented a pilot installation on the Gullfaks A, B & C platforms. Emerson 648 wireless temperature transmitters were installed to indirectly indicate flow on lines at each of forty wells. The wireless devices are used to transmit data from clamp-on temperature sensors mounted on the surface of the flow pipes.

“Installing additional wired measurement points at the wellhead would mean long cable trays and a lot of wiring,” said Anders Røyrøy, Project Manager, Research & Development Projects, StatoilHydro Norway. “Wireless offers an inherent reduction in cabling infrastructure, complexity and weight, resulting in significantly lower installation costs.”

“Because there is daily radio communication within the well area it is essential that the wireless field network can coexist without any reduction in performance,” continued Røyrøy. “We have found that Emerson’s Smart Wireless mitigates the impact of interference and the data reliability is 100%.”

In contrast with the once-a-shift manual recordings, Emerson’s wireless devices now transmit readings every 30 seconds back to the Smart Wireless Gateway. The gateway is hardwired straight into the existing control system providing operators with the real time information they need to react quickly to any change in flow.

”Emerson’s wireless transmitters have enabled the quick and reliable detection of lost flow, and the immediate action to re-establish flow has increased production significantly,” said Tormod Jenssen, Staff Engineer, Plant Integrity, Gullfaks field.

“Emerson’s wireless devices are installed very quickly,” said Røyrøy. “Typically each device takes only a matter of hours to install compared to up to two days for a conventional wired device.”

StatoilHydro has now implemented additional Smart Wireless devices on Platforms A, B and C, bringing the total to 90 wireless transmitters covering all production flow lines at Gullfaks.

“Rich process information and plant diagnostics are essential for unmanned operation and by introducing Smart Wireless transmitters to our platforms we are making broad strides towards our aims,” said Røyrøy.

Emerson's Smart Wireless offering is an extension of the company’s PlantWeb digital architecture. End users can install either field or plant networks or both in a unified wireless approach that uses the full range consisting of unified plant and field networks. SmartStart wireless services are available to assist where needed. AMS Suite predictive maintenance software maximises diagnostics from field networks which include Rosemount transmitters and flowmeters, and Rosemount Analytical wireless devices, wired Micro Motion Coriolis and Daniel flowmeters, and Fisher digital valves. Native wireless interface in the DeltaV or Ovation digital automation systems bring the new process and plant information into full view for operations, maintenance, and plant management.

The 8I20 is a low cost 2200W 400V three phase torque mode amplifier for synchronous permanent magnet servo motors (Brushless AC servo) up to approximately 3HP. The 8I20 will supply peak currents of 30A and RMS continuous currents of up to 16A. High side logic and gate power are derived from the low side allowing a wide operational bus voltage range (24 to 400VDC) and host communication when bus voltage is off. Low side power can be 5V +-5% or 7-48V unregulated. 3750V RMS isolation is provided between high and low side electronics.

Hall effect current sensing is used along with high speed bus voltage monitoring for an accurate, stable, and fast current/torque control loop. High side over current sensing protects the IGBT module from line-line and line-ground faults. A brake output capable of 15A drive is provided. The brake output can be driven at a presettable overvoltage setting.

Even though it uses a 40 MIPs DSP, the 8I20 is a basic torque mode amplifier suitable for integration in host based motion control systems. The 8I20 uses the hosts requested torque and reference angle to control the current loop. The 8I20 can echo status information to the host controller including bus voltage, phase currents, card temperature etc. The host controller may be a PC with a fast serial interface and quadrature counters or a Mesa FPGA card running SoftDMC or HostMot2 firmware.

For applications that require a smart amplifier, the 8C20 daughter card can be added. Omron Electronics meets machine builders' counting and positioning needs with a single H7BX multi-function counter that delivers simple preset and batch counting functions as well as advanced dual counter and tachometer functions. It fits standard DIN cutouts with a front panel measuring 72 x 72 mm and shallow mounting depth of 100 mm. The large, 6-digit highly visible backlit LCD display can be set to change color (red/green) when status changes enabling operators to check output status at a distance. User settings are simplified with a key for each digit on the IP54 rated front panel. Basic function setup via internal DIP switches, and 5-level key access protection with panel indicator discourage unauthorized setting changes. The counters comply with UL, CSA and RoHS standards and have CE marking.

Omron's H7BX provides a total and preset counter, batch counter, dual counter, and tachometer. It accepts a wide range of inputs--NPN/PNP (multi-inputs), 2-wire DC sensors--for increment, decrement, command, individual, and quadrature operation modes. All models provide both contact output rated 3 A at 250 VDC/30 VDC, and NPN transistor output rated 100 mA max. at 30 VDC. The main display PV height is 13.5mm and SV height is 9.5mm. The display can be set for green or red and it can be programmed to change when a specific value is reached. The set value range can be selected as -99999 to 999999 or 0 to 999999.

The multi-function H7BX counter with dual counter and tachometer is available from stock with list price of $299. A 4-function counter without dual counter and tachometer is available at $289.

ABB helped TenneT and Stattnet, the Dutch and Norwegian transmission system operators, officially open a 580-kilometer power link between the two countries.

The project brings the goal of a common power network and a reliable, efficient electricity supply for Europe a step closer to reality. TenneT and Stattnet jointly own the transmission link for which ABB supplied the key technologies.

Acromag extended its EtherStax line of rugged, high-density Ethernet I/O blocks for distributed I/O and SCADA applications with the release of new analog input models. The ES2161 and ES2162 accept 32 differential DC current or voltage inputs, respectively, and interface the signals to Ethernet devices or controllers with Modbus TCP/IP or UDP/IP protocol communication. ES2162 units also accept signals from 8B signal conditioning module racks through two DB25 ports to monitor a wider variety of sensors including temperature, frequency, and load cells. Fast scanning updates all 32 channels in less than 5mS. An embedded web page provides easy setup menus to eliminate programming. Units are available in a variety of configurations with prices starting at $950.

Two models, each with 32 differential analog inputs and 16-bit A/D, support a variety of I/O ranges. The ES2161 accepts DC current with ±20mA, 0-20mA, or 4-20mA input ranges. ES2162 units accept ±5V or ±10V ranges and provide DB25 ports for alternate connection of two 7B or 8B signal conditioning module racks supporting nearly 100 additional input types. Maximum scan rates of over 1KHz are achievable. Dual-format data registers support both 16-bit signed and 32-bit floating point formats. IEEE-754 32-bit floating point scaling registers are configurable on a per-channel basis.

Numerous features help increase reliability, improve performance, and protect from harsh industrial environments. Dual network ports support 10/100Base-TX copper and 100Base-FX fiber-optic connections with a redundant communication path for critical applications. Dual DC power terminals enable use of redundant power sources. A failsafe relay provides alarm output on a power or link-loss failure. Continuous 250V AC (354V DC) isolation – with a peak 1500V AC rating – safely separates I/O signals from the power, relay, and Ethernet ports. The compact, stackable aluminum enclosure resists shock and vibration making it ideal for mounting directly on machinery. Multiple units are stackable in a space-saving 8 x 7” footprint. An internal isolated dual-port Ethernet switch provides dual-path communication redundancy with support of STP, RSTP, and proprietary redundancy schemes. EtherStax units can operate as controller slaves or communicate independently between units. Ten Modbus TCP/IP sockets allow simultaneous communication with multiple masters.

The stackable, high-density packaging enables installation of nearly 100 I/O points in minimal panel space. A high-strength aluminum enclosure gives IP20 protection with shock and vibration resistance. This rugged design is ideal for mounting on DIN rails, walls, or directly on machinery. Pluggable terminal blocks make for easy installation and servicing. A stackable open board version (no housing) simplifies mounting in alternative enclosures with lower costs for OEMs and system integrators.

EtherStax I/O are designed for high-reliability operation. Units feature 1500Vrms isolation with surge protection to increase performance and minimize downtime. The isolation separates power, relay, I/O, and individual Ethernet ports. To further minimize downtime, the I/O circuitry features over-temperature, over-voltage, and over-current protection. Industrial-grade specs include extended -40 to 70°C operating temperatures for low power, high efficiency, fan-less designs. Redundant DC power input with internal diode coupling delivers a “bump-less” transfer to the backup power source. A hardware watchdog timer can send outputs to a failsafe state or hold the last value if there is a communication failure. Failsafe SPST 5A fault relays provide local alarming, notification, or shutdown if network communication or power fail.

News: Emerson enhances X-STREAM flue gas analyzers

Emerson Process Management enhanced its Rosemount Analytical X-STREAM Oxygen Analyzers to improve efficiencies of large boilers and furnaces and provide immediate reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions with minimal investment.

Large industrial boilers and furnaces are primary generators of the greenhouse gas CO2. Rosemount Analytical X-STREAM O2 in situ combustion flue gas analyzers are a key tool for optimizing combustion, and reducing emissions. These analyzers provide information to control the fuel-to-air ratio of the burner, much in the same way it’s done on today’s automobiles. The X-STREAM O2 probe now offers improved AccuMax accuracy specifications, extended temperature capability, and new longer probe lengths up to 18 feet long to satisfy the need of the industry’s biggest boilers and furnaces.

According to Doug Simmers, worldwide product manager for Rosemount Analytical, large furnaces will typically have many burners delivering fuel and air into the combustion zone, which may be the size of a 10 story office building. Balancing the burners maximizes heat rate efficiency, and also minimizes the potential damage to the furnace from flame impingement, tube leaks, excessive soot, slagging, and many other potential operational problems.

To achieve balance and avoid these problems, many facilities use permanently mounted O2 probes at different locations inside the flue gas duct and average the readings inside the control system to optimize the total furnace fuel-to-air-ratio. Readings from the O2 probes also provide an indication of the stratification of flue gases inside the furnace.

“Many traditional O2 analyzers have had a fixed insertion depth, and engineers have had to guess at the best placement of the probes,” Simmers explained. “The new longer probes from Rosemount Analytical not only reach further into these large ducts, but they now have the ability to be adjusted after installation so that the entire width of the flue gas duct can be characterized.”

The X-STREAM line of combustion O2 probes offer long life in this difficult service, and are now designed to be repaired without removing the probe from the furnace duct. Additionally, they can provide indication of reducing conditions that may occur inside the furnace during plant upsets.

Haydon Switch & Instrument introduces the 28000 series (Size 11) double stack non captive hybrid linear actuator, the latest addition to its continuously growing hybrid motor line. Equipment designers and engineers now have an even more compact option for their linear motion applications. The new size 11 double stack non captive hybrid linear actuator includes numerous patent pending innovations that provide customers high performance and endurance in a small package.

In the double stack non-captive linear actuator design, the lead screw runs axially through the center of the motor and must be restrained from rotating for proper operation. This is normally accomplished by attaching the screw to a non-rotating member of the mechanical assembly. As the internal threaded rotor rotates the lead screw will move axially but will not rotate. This design is especially suited for long linear travel requirements and applications where the lead screw is secured at both ends and the motor translates along the lead screw. When incorporating the latter approach, the motor must be prevented from rotating.

Ruland offers two series of zero backlash flexible beam couplings with distinct performance features suitable for different types of applications. The couplings are machined from a single piece of aluminum and feature multiple spiral cuts. The multiple cut design provides higher torsional stiffness and torque capabilities, and greatly reduced wind-up when compared to a commodity type single beam coupling. National Instruments announced the NI Sound and Vibration Measurement Suite Version 6.0 and the newest 16-channel data acquisition module for sound and vibration, the NI PXI-4495.

The Sound and Vibration Measurement Suite 6.0 is the most comprehensive National Instruments collection of analysis and signal processing tools for noise, vibration and harshness (NVH); machine condition monitoring (MCM); and audio test applications. It includes both the NI Sound and Vibration Assistant 6.0, application software that combines interactive, configurable data acquisition, analysis and data logging, and NI LabVIEW analysis VIs. The new version extends sound and vibration measurement capability with order analysis support in the Sound and Vibration Assistant and new LabVIEW VIs for torsional vibration measurement and human vibration weighting filters.

In addition, the 16-channel, 24-bit, DC-coupled PXI-4495 complements the PXI-4496 and PXI-4498 high-channel-count dynamic signal acquisition (DSA) modules.

The Sound and Vibration Assistant is designed to simplify the process of acquiring and analyzing noise and vibration signals by offering a stand-alone, interactive analysis and acquisition environment. The stand-alone software offers a way to continually interact with varying data analysis settings while logging data to disk for more analysis later. For example, engineers can vary the weighting and bandwidth of an octave spectrum while recording sound-level data or adjust the window applied to a power spectrum while recording overall vibration readings. In addition, the Sound and Vibration Assistant makes it possible to share acquired signals and analysis results with other applications through universal file format (UFF) file I/O support.

The Sound and Vibration Assistant includes analysis features for NVH, MCM and audio test applications. The assistant also provides analysis functions such as power spectrum, octave analysis, frequency response, sound and vibration level, tachometer processing, order analysis and order tracking. Engineers can use the Sound and Vibration Assistant in the measurement of commercial audio devices including cell phones and speakers. Maintenance engineers also can use the Sound and Vibration Assistant in MCM applications in industries including power generation and oil and gas.

The Sound and Vibration Measurement Suite 6.0 extends the analysis functionality of NI LabVIEW software with torsional vibration and human vibration weighting filter LabVIEW VIs. Torsional vibration is a common phenomenon for rotating machinery such as engines, compressors and turbines. Rotating components, such as shafts and couplings, rotate when torque is applied. Monitoring these torsional vibrations in a rotating system helps to ensure that the system operates properly. Human vibration refers to the effects of mechanical vibration on the human body. Measuring and analyzing human vibration signals can help control the negative effects of mechanical vibration in applications that are rigorous on the human body.

The PXI-4495 is a high-accuracy, DC-coupled data acquisition module specifically designed for high-channel-count sound and vibration applications such as structural health monitoring, electrical power measurements and MCM. With 16 simultaneously sampled channels in a single PXI module, the PXI-4495 is twice the density of any other simultaneously-sampled DSA device from NI. Engineers can use the NI PXI-4495 in an 18-slot PXI chassis to synchronize up to 272 channels. The module saves application development time by reducing the need for code generation because it is programmed with NI-DAQmx featuring DAQmx Channel Expansion functionality, allowing data acquisition code to be the same for one channel, 16 channels or 272 channels. The PXI-4495 module features a maximum sampling rate of 204.8 kS/s per channel.

Baldor has extended its range of three-phase AC motor drives compatible with the Ethernet-compatible Powerlink protocol, adding three higher power versions rated for continuous outputs from 21.5 to 33.5A. The new drives extend the significant system building advantages of Powerlink to a much wider range of continuous and heavy-duty applications, including printing, papermaking, converting, textiles, plastics and steel production.

Called MotiFlex e100, the three-phase AC drive range now offers eight choices of power output from 1.5 to 33.5A. For many of the applications targeted by this product release, the higher power versions will provide the means to bring large AC induction motors into the Ethernet Powerlink control network, such as those used on the main axes of web processes.

"Baldor now has the broadest range of Powerlink compatible single- and three-phase drives in the industry, giving a majority of industrial system builders the platform to redesign their machinery," says Baldor's David Greensmith. "Powerlink offers a very versatile control platform that can improve performance substantially, while simultaneously simplifying the control architecture and reducing costs."

In addition to introducing the flexibility of high-speed Ethernet and TCP/IP connectivity into the higher power machine building sector, the drives' high degree of modularity, combined with novel design features, provides users with significant potential for saving costs.

MotiFlex e100 drives can be used in both centralized control and distributed 'intelligent drive' scenarios for example, in both cases with substantial savings in the electrical power components typically required.

Compatibility with the Ethernet Powerlink protocol introduces great flexibility into electrical system building. Each drive features an Ethernet hub enabling systems to be built using a simple daisy-chain connection scheme. The high-speed and deterministic Ethernet Powerlink network, operating at 100 Mbits/sec, cuts cabling substantially, and can greatly reduce the costs of building large multi-axis systems. For example, a single Baldor Ethernet Powerlink machine controller can manage systems up to 16 interpolated axes.

In terms of core performance as an AC drive, a Baldor development team has been working for over three years on MotiFlex. The resulting design incorporates a large range of features that serve to liberate high power machinery builders to make savings and improve machine performance.

Each MotiFlex drive can operate independently, or as part of a shared DC bus system. When operating in a shared DC bus system, power regenerated back into any drive during the deceleration phase of an axis may be utilized by the other axes, saving energy costs. As each drive has a local capacitor bank, an external braking resistor is often not required - because the total capacitance of the system may be sufficient to store the energy without reaching the over-voltage limit.

Unlike traditional shared DC bus systems, Motiflex drive systems do not require a separate power supply unit. Instead, the AC-DC converter stage in each drive is capable of supplying power not only to itself, but also to a drive or combination of drives of the same total rating. For many multi-axis applications, this will often mean that the highest-rated drive will be able to power the rest of the system.

For many multi-axis systems, this approach almost invariably results in the need for fewer electrical components, and simpler system building, as only one set of contactors, fuses or MCBs, terminal blocks, and one EMC filter is needed for the whole system. Alternative approaches on the market today can require the same AC components for each drive, or the addition of separate power supplies and capacitor banks with fixed ratings that often mean they may be oversized for the application in question.

The drive's control electronics can draw power from the main AC-DC power supply, or from a 24 VDC linking system on the front panel. Using the 24 VDC supply ensures that the control and communications status are maintained if the system is used in an application subject to safety shut downs, where the mains supply is disconnected.

Configuration flexibility has been at the core of the design requirements. Each drive incorporates a universal encoder input (incremental encoder, EnDat, SSI, sincos, multi-turn and single-turn) and built-in I/O (three digital inputs, two digital outputs, a +/-10V analog input, brake control output, plus CANopen and USB ports). A further two 'option card' slots provide an expansion capability that allows users to precisely configure the local attributes of the drive, and/or provide an upgrade path. The choice of expansion options includes analog and digital I/O, resolver feedback, encoder feedback, and fieldbus interfaces including Profibus, Modbus and Devicenet. The CANopen interface and the fieldbus expansion option provide great flexibility to employ the drive as a gateway for interfacing with other machine control systems such as PLCs.

A further unique expansion option for the drive is a plug-in machine controller compatible with Baldor's Mint motion language. This option allows a MotiFlex e100 to be used as a standalone 'intelligent drive', providing a distributed motion solution that can cut hardware costs dramatically. This low-cost Mint card is also Ethernet Powerlink compatible, and will control up to three further daisy-chained MotiFlex e100 drives, providing a low-cost automation solution for many common multi-axis requirements. If more axes are required, Baldor's panel-mounting NextMove e100 controller provides a solution.

One additional feature of the drive's configuration flexibility stems from tools provided with the drive, in Baldor's configuration software, Mint Workbench. Options include configuration wizards, auto-tuning software, and anti-resonance filters that may be used for both rotary and linear servo and vector motors.

The Mint language has been developed over nearly 20 years and today offers a high-productivity development environment for automation applications. Its use of high-level English like commands simplifies program writing and comprehension. These commands include probably the richest motion control programming facilities available worldwide, with 'keywords' that effectively provide templates or 'canned' software functions for common motion/movement related functions. The incredible range of Mint's motion control functions compared with 'open' industry software - greatly simplifies complex machine design projects. The software also comes with its own license-free multi-tasking operating system, and free Active X components for easy connectivity with PCs.

The new drives complete Baldor's range of Ethernet Powerlink products for motion control. Developers can now choose from a portfolio that includes single-phase and three-phase drives, a panel-mounting machine controller suitable for large multi-axis systems and machinery, and a low-cost plug-in board for 'intelligent drive' and simpler applications, plus both linear and rotary servo motors. Many more compatible machine control system components and accessories are available from other Ethernet Powerlink suppliers, providing an advanced and highly economic platform for machine design.

Rockwell Automation is introducing a new line of linear stages for a wide range of load-carrying applications, offering machine builders substantial time and cost savings associated with design, programming and commissioning. The Allen-Bradley MP-Series Integrated Linear Stages use Rockwell Automation programming tools familiar to most OEMs and machine builders, and provide seamless integration with other parts of the control system.

Linear stages - the mechanisms that support loads and provide linear actuation – are critical for successful movement of linear functions on a range of machines. “Machine builders who build their own linear stages frequently spend a great deal of time and money purchasing, assembling, programming and troubleshooting multiple components from different suppliers,” said Mike Woelfel, Kinetix Linear Motion Product Marketing Manager, Rockwell Automation. “And the situation becomes even more complicated when direct drive linear motor technology is applied, since mechanical and electrical integration require the additional considerations of X and Y.” Because the MP-Series Integrated Linear Stages are available in both ballscrew and direct drive linear motor versions, machine designers can now choose a linear stage based purely on desired performance and not worry about the internal technology. ASM Sensors, Inc. introduces the latest addition to the POSIROT family, PRAS3, a new magnetic angular position sensor in a compact 1.4 in. diameter housing. The active sensor element uses an internal, contact-free permanent magnet to determine the angular position. The measurement ranges are available in 15° increments: 0-15°, 0-30°, 0-45° up to 0-360°. The servo flange mounting insures quick and easy installation for the PRAS3 series. PCI-1202U PCI interface card has two AMONet master ports and supports Advantech’s AMAX line of motion and control products.

AMONet is a hybrid RS-485 based network similar to other proprietary fieldbus networks intended to offer high speed deterministic communication. Thanks to their chemically resistant parylene coating, Baumer’s UNAR ultrasonic sensors are ideally suitable for level monitoring in environments of aggressive substances, therefore improving the process security considerably.

Ultrasonic sensors have the unique ability to detect media and objects securely and reliably, regardless of their surface characteristics and color. Due to this, ultrasonic sensors are being employed for level monitoring of granulates, pastes or liquids increasingly. However, many of these media involve liquids or generate vapors that can have a damaging effect on material in the long term and consequently risk the functional reliability of standard sensors.

Therefore, special attention has been paid to these application aspects when designing the new UNAR family of ultrasonic sensors. Automation Systems Interconnect, Inc. (ASI) – Carlisle, PA released its new line of custom industrial bus I/O modules. If a design requires devices to communicate to an existing bus system or multiple bus systems, ASI can develop an I/O module that will interface to any industrial bus system.
